Planning an Awesome Staycation!

by Craig & Linda Nowicke

Ahh!  Summer vacation! The kids are out of school and it’s time to get away and have some fun.  Whether your vacation is about relaxation or adventure (or a little of both), it is something we all look forward to. But sometimes circumstances make travel impossible.  Maybe it’s cost prohibitive, or perhaps some family members can’t get a whole week off work.  Don’t despair! You are lucky to LIVE in a popular travel destination. That means you can take advantage of all the local attractions and plan a wonderful staycation.  You get all the perks of a summer getaway while still getting to sleep in the comfort of your own bed each night. And it’s a great way to rest and rejuvenate without breaking the bank!  Here are some tips for planning the staycation of your dreams:

  1. PLAN AHEAD - Do NOT attempt to “wing it” on your staycation.  I repeat - do NOT attempt to “wing it” on your staycation.  If you wake up each morning without an idea of what you’re going to do that day, you will waste precious time trying to make decisions.  Create a schedule for the week and stick to it as much as possible.  That doesn’t mean you can’t be flexible and change your mind during the week, but having a general plan will allow you to budget your time and get you moving each day.
  2. CREATE A BUDGET - You not only want to budget your time, but your money as well.  Just like when you vacation out of town, you should have an idea of how much you want to spend on your staycation.  It doesn’t have to be strict.  But make sure you consider the cost of tickets to events and attractions and meals so that you aren’t overwhelmed by unexpected costs.
  3. BE A TOURIST IN YOUR OWN TOWN - Sometimes when you live somewhere, you tend to not take advantage of the local attractions.  A staycation is the perfect opportunity to see what you’ve been missing! Explore your city as if you were a tourist visiting for the first time.  Eat at restaurants that are new to you, visit museums you have never seen before and check out a calendar of events for your area to find out what special events are going on that week. 4. REST, RELAX & REJUVENATE - Whether you kick back with a good book and a cold drink, or you take a nap in the middle of the day, make sure you have a day to just “chill”.  If you have young children, plan for them to attend a day camp of some kind so that the adults in the family can treat yourselves to a spa day.  If you are on the go every single day of your Staycation, you will end up more tired than you were when you started!  So, give yourself the gift of relaxation! Staycation Ideas:

-          Take a hike and enjoy a picnic. Great Places to Hike in Tampa Bay

-          Explore your city. Visit free museums, bookstores, historic sites, and touristy places you’ve never been.

-          Camp out in your own backyard. Put up a tent, have a water balloon battle, light the fire pit and make s’mores, tell ghost stories.

-          Have a movie night at home. Find a movie everyone will enjoy. Create a “concession stand” with popcorn, candy and drinks.  Make it comfy with lots of pillows and blankets. Turn down the lights and enjoy a home theater experience!

-          Plan a game night.  Pull out your board games (or maybe purchase a couple of new ones) and invite some friends and family over for a rollicking game night.

-          Have a beach day.  Make sure to check what the weather will be like during your staycation week and plan your beach day accordingly.  Pack snacks and toys and enjoy a day with no time schedule.  Make sure you use sunscreen!

-          Go to a ball game! Tampa Bay Rays Schedule

If you’re still not sold on the idea of a staycation, think about these perks:

  • You will save money!  No airfare, hotel or rental car costs.
  • You will save time! No wasted travel day at the beginning and end of your vacation time.
  • You will save energy! Travel can be exhausting.
  • No cancellations! Nothing ruins a vacation faster than an airline cancelling your flight. You are in total control of your staycation.  Bad weather? Who cares? You can easily adjust your plans and you won’t miss out on a thing!
  • Restful sleep in your own bed!  Enough said!

The key to enjoying your staycation is to deviate from your normal routine as much as possible.  No laundry, yard work or house cleaning.  Just relax and enjoy!!

Happy Veteran's Day!

by Craig & Linda Nowicke

It happened on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. An armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars.

Show your appreciation for our veterans by attending one of the events being held in their honor. See the links for details.

Happy Halloween Tampa!

by Craig & Linda Nowicke

halloweenThere's a goblin at my window,
A monster by my door.
The pumpkin at my table
Keeps on smiling more and more.
There's a ghost who haunts my bedroom,
A witch whose face is green.
They used to be my family,
Till they dressed for Halloween.
- by Sandra Liatsos

Question: What do you do when 50 zombies surround your Tampa home?
Answer: Hope it’s Halloween!!

Did you know that 86% of Americans decorate their houses for Halloween? And Halloween in the US is second only to Christmas in terms of consumer spending?!

Halloween actually started as a kind of semi-serious holiday…it was a celebration of the end of the harvest and it is on the eve of All Saints Day (November 1st), also known as All Hallows Day.

That is a day of remembering the saints who have departed this life. Hallows Eve, or evening, became shortened to Hallowe’en and then Halloween. Because it is a day of remembering the dead it conjures up images of ghosts and other spooky things in the night before All Saints Day.

It has become a night of costumes and partying and trick-or-treating. In old Scotland trick-or-treating was known as “guising.” That came from the word “disguise,” as in “disguising” yourself using a costume to go around soliciting treats. Isn’t that a fun word?

halloweenSpeaking of fun, are you going to carve a pumpkin into a jack-o-lantern? What a fun way to decorate your Tampa home for the holiday. By the way, the term “jack-o-lantern” is said to have come from the spooky appearance of peat bogs sometimes burning in the night. A burning bog flickers with small flames that look very spooky and unnatural at night. If you want some fun with transforming a pumpkin here’s where you can get some patterns and stencils.

If you’re looking for some ideas for dressing up for Halloween try this website for costumes. And your Tampa home won’t be complete unless you have plenty of treats on hand for the goblins coming to your door. Most of all have fun and enjoy the holiday.

Question: What room does a ghost not need?
A living room!

Happy Halloween!

Happy 4th of July!

by Craig & Linda Nowicke

“This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.”  ~Elmer Davis

4th of julyAs Americans, we celebrate Independence Day on July 4th to honor our nation’s birthday.  It is day replete with parades, cookouts, picnics, flag waving, fireworks, and a heavy dose of patriotism.

JULY 4, 1776:  The Second Continental Congress completed its work on the Declaration of Independence.

JULY 4, 1941:  Independence Day was first celebrated as a federal legal holiday.

“We must be free not because we claim freedom, but because we practice it.”.  ~William Faulkner

Did you know that there is a one-gun salute fired at noon on July 4th on every capable military base?  It is called the Salute to the Union.

IT’S A GRAND OLD FLAGand there are specific rules about displaying it proudly and properly. Click here to brush up on how to honor Old Glory.

FABULOUS FOOD:  Having a cookout or picnic with friends and family?   Think about foods that come in patriotic colors--white snow cone cups filled with red and blue berries, e.g.  Be sure to offer hot dogs, hamburgers, cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, and watermelon for an all-American meal.  Maybe even Mom’s apple pie to top it off!  Food Network stars share many delicious recipes for this holiday, and the web even offers a video of grilling safety tips.  For updated and healthy food choices, visit

Having a holiday gathering?  Better Homes and Gardens has many websites to help you with food, decorations, and crafts for the kids.  Click here for trivia questions such as” How many verses does the Star Spangled Banner have?” to challenge your guests.

flag fireworksSpread the word—and offers a good selection of holiday-themed cards to send to family and friends.

FIREWORKS FINALE:  Nearly every U.S. city or town offers an exciting fireworks display to end the day’s festivities, and we’re never to old or young to ooh and ah at the spectacle.  Perhaps the longest celebration is fittingly held in Philadelphia---a 9 day festival culminating in back-to-back fireworks!

George Washington once said, “Liberty, when it begins to take root, is a plant of rapid growth.”  Do remember, however, that such a plant needs to cherished, nourished, and protected by each and every American.

Have a safe and happy 4th!

Things To Do In Tampa: Flicks and Food Trucks

by Craig & Linda Nowicke

flicks and food trucksPlease read below to learn about the latest news at your local food truck event this week! We hope you can join us in support for your local vendors who offer authentic and gourmet food truck fare!

Event Details!

Location & Parking

The event is located at 1208 East Kennedy Blvd, Tampa FL 33602.

Please plan to Park at the parking garage located at Grand Central at Kennedy.

For Directions to Grand Central and for more information on additional parking please visit

15 Food Trucks will park on Madison Street. Short films and live music will rotate every 1/2 hr and local beer will be provided by the Pour House in the courtyard at Grand Central.

Fast Facts to keep in mind when planning your arrival:

  • Please plan to expect waiting in line for your orders. While the food is worth the wait, it does not come fast because it is not "fast food".
  • These are full blown restaurants on wheels and food is made to order.
  • Plan to experience more than one food truck. Everyone serves something different so ordering small is key.
  • Most people stand and eat at Food Truck events. If you are one who likes to sit, there is limited seating for the movies so come early for a good spot or feel free to bring your own folding chair.
  • Consider it similar to tailgating!
  • Be sure to bring cash for your purchases, there is an ATM on site inside the courtyard area. Vendors appreciate small bills vs 10's & 20's.
  • Some trucks do take Credit Cards but many do not.
